Glass Tile Hair Pin

So, if you have tried working with glass tiles, you know how addictive it is.  Part of it is that it's easy, part of it is that it's fun - you can dream up a whole lot of original things to do on a one-inch tile!  But I think a lot of it also is just that there are a lot in a pack!  So I've been brainstorming for other ways to use them, especially this week with my sewing machine in the shop.

After having made necklaces and magnets already, I thought I'd give a hair accessory a try.  I don't wear a lot of barrettes - all I normally use is the occasional hair pin.  So I raided my sticker supply and found something green for the upcoming St. Patrick's Day, and I keep hair pin bails on-hand too.  So everything for this project came from my stash, which is always a good thing!

I'm only going to give you the condensed version of the tutorial, since I have shown you... er, lots of tile projects already. :)  If you missed them, here are a few you can visit from my archives to get more info!

So the short version for hair pins - this is what you need:

  • Stickers or printed graphics (and some Mod Podge, if you're using a paper graphic from your printer)
  • Tile(s)
  • Hair pin bail (s)
  • E6000 or other heavy-duty adhesive
  • Optional dimensional glaze (I use Glamour Glaze)

Design your tile however you like.  I chose a shamrock sticker on an opaque tile, and gave it a coat of dimensional glaze.  Once it dried (the drying time is much longer than the project time, this takes very little actual work), I attached the bail to the back with some E6000.

I took about five minutes making my tile in the morning, took a minute to attach the bail at lunchtime, and by the afternoon, all I had left to to was take a couple photographs - including the ever-awkward self-portrait, so you can see what it actually looks like when you wear it. :)

What other ideas have you dreamed up for using leftover tiles?  Headbands?  Pushpins?  Cufflinks?

Irish Blessing Printable

So I have good news and bad news.  The bad  news is, I think I need to get my sewing machine serviced.  Cleaned, or something - it's not running too well.  Boo!  So I haven't been able to work on any sewing projects.

The good news is that I have turned my attention to other creative outlets.  Yesterday I made my first-ever printable (and I am embarrassed at how easy it was once I figured out what I was doing).  Well, at least I think I figured out what I was doing.  Please let me know if anything isn't working properly in the link below. ;)

I love this little blessing.  I can't confirm 100% that it's really an Irish Blessing, but the internet says it is so I go with it, LOL!  It's a blessing I always give for housewarmings, though, because it's just so sweet.

Anyway, since it's one I love to share, and it's just in time for St. Patrick's Day, I thought I'd share it with all of you too!  In other St. Patrick's Day news, Christina from Mrs. Fox's Sweets and I will be teaming up again for a St. Patrick's Day link party.  It starts March 1st - this Thursday morning - and runs through the 17th.  Come on over and link up all your green goodies, and get some ideas for getting your Irish on! ;)

Hope your Tuesday is off to a fantastic start!  And please think happy thoughts for my sewing machine, LOL!

Giant Cookie

Well, it was a busy weekend around here, so I didn't get a whole lot done, creative-wise.  I did, however, enjoy quite a nice weekend with my family, which is even better. :)

About the only creative endeavor I did undertake was my first giant cookie.  Yes, you read that right: giant cookie.

And yes, that is a dinner plate.  I made a 1/2 batch (yield of normally 2 - 2-1/2 dozen regular sized cookies) of chocolate chip cookie dough, and pressed it into a pair of heart-shaped pans I scored in the clearance section at Walmart.

Valentine's stuff was 75% off, so I couldn't walk away from this set for $2.25. (Yes, I bought two sets, for that price.)

This is my first attempt at a giant cookie.  I cooked these for 15 minutes instead of my normal 8-1/2 minutes.     I feel like they were a little overdone - not burned or anything, but cooked to crispy instead of chewy.  So you may want to try taking them out before they look all the way done, if you try this.  But my husband was pretty excited to see them, nonetheless. :)

Hope you had a fantastic weekend!!

Weekend Fun: Blog Tag. I'm it!

Terry over at These Peas Taste Funny has tagged me in a bloggy version of tag.  So since I'm it, you're going to learn a little about me today. :)

RULES:
  • You must post the rules.
  • Answer the 11 questions that the tagger posted for you & then create 11 questions to ask the people you've tagged.
  • Tag 11 people and link them in your post.
  • Let them know you have tagged them.
1. How did you decide to start blogging?

When I had Raya, I lost all my "me-time". :) You moms know what I mean.  It's a bit of an adjustment when you have your first baby!  As a means of keeping my sanity, I started doing a bit of crafting.  Which led to perusing the craft blogs.  Which led to more crafting.  Which led to entering a few crafty challenges, which led to winning one of them!  Which led to Carlee of Ladybird Ln. asking me why on earth I didn't have a blog.  Which led to her offer to make me a header, which led to me dreaming up an idea of a collection of one-hour projects, which is all I usually had time for.  So I found myself with an idea, and a name, and a brand-spanking new header, so really - there was nothing left to do but start blogging! :)

2. What would be your dream job?

My dream is to do a whole bunch of things.  Some days I wish I were a pro craft blogger.  Some days I wish I were a pilot or a tour guide in some tourist destination.  Some days I wish I were a stay-at-home-mom.  Some days I dream I'm a published author, and I still want to be a rock star when I grow up.  So... I guess a traveling crafty pilot rock star writer with kids?  That's a real thing, right? ;)

3. What is your favourite movie or book?

I think asking a reader what is their favorite book is a bit like asking a parent who is their favorite child.  It's impossible.  Recently I really enjoyed Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games, and I always come back to Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth books (I'm midway through the series for the 6th time right now).  As a kid, I adored a collection of children's poems that I still have, and read to Raya.  My very first favorites when I started reading on my own were the Ramona Quimby books.  The first book I ever read several times was Stephen King's Eyes of the Dragon.  Man, I could really keep going into categories of favorites that only make sense to me, but I'll spare you...

4. Favourite food?

Yes.  Food is my favorite.

5. If you had an entire afternoon free, who would you want to spend it with and doing what?

Wow, the thoughts that go through my mind on this one.  Now, if I suddenly found myself with a normal weekday afternoon free, I'd go home and work on a quilt I just started for Raya while she's napping and when she got up, we'd go visit my husband at work.  But if we're talking about an anything-you-want afternoon, I'd sit on a beach with a delicious beverage and a good book.  I am sure this sounds awful, but I would SO enjoy an afternoon to myself - I haven't had one in a very, very long time!

6. What is the most significant goal you have achieved to date?

The significance is usually in the proximity to the achievement, for me.  I've accomplished some big things I wanted to do in my life, but what feels significant is what's most recent.  I've lost 30 lbs.  I think that was actually more difficult than getting my entire college degree, LOL, and I'd like to keep going!  But I don't know that it's more significant, than, say, growing a human being.  I'm also rather proud of having written 5 novels and 2 screenplays, learning to ride a motorcycle, and cooking dinner not one but TWO nights this week.  So I've got a lot going for me that's worth celebrating.

7. What is your dream vacation?

Oh man.  Everywhere.  I want to see Italy and Ireland.  And Tahiti.  I want to go somewhere I can go snorkeling and drive on the wrong side of the road.  I want to soak up some sunshine and go adventuring and see some really old castles or ruins or marvels of nature.  Frankly, I think any vacation will do.  After all, I did say I want to be a traveling crafty pilot rock star writer with kids.

8. When you go to weddings, do you dance or sit like a bump?

I hate weddings.  I like to leave when the music starts. :P

9. If you were going to volunteer for an organization, what would it be?

I do volunteer!  I organize events for aspiring writers who do NaNoWriMo.  I also miss doing Junior Achievement - my old job let me teach as many classes as I wanted, so I nearly always had a first or second grade class going.

10. Favourite celebrity or sports star?

Jared Leto, hands down.

Although I am also a big fan of Ken Jennings, actually, but I only love him for his brain. ;)

11. What is your best go-to recipe when you have company coming?

Ha.  Hahahaha.  HAHAHAHA.  I get takeout!

So that's me, in a nutshell.  I now have to pick 11 questions of my own to ask 11 new tag-ees.  So here goes:

  1. If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
  2. What's your guilty pleasure?
  3. Socks or barefoot?
  4. What's the fastest way to make you mad?
  5. What's your favorite time of day?
  6. What's your most embarrassing moment you dare to share?
  7. Sweet or Salty?
  8. What's the story about whichever you prefer to share: either your first car, or your first kiss?
  9. If you could only have one box of craft supplies, what would be in it?
  10. What's something you're proud of?
  11. What is the best gift someone could give you?

Now, 11 bloggers to tag... (no obligation to play along, but I sure hope you do, this has been a fun post!)

Carlee at Ladybird Ln.

Ramona at Create with Joy

Freestyle Friday #30

Welcome back, you're just in time for the party!

How has your week been?  The weekend is thankfully in sight!  Things have actually been pretty uneventful here.  Which is always better than disastrous, so I guess I don't mind a boring week every once in a while. :)

We had some awesome links last week.  Check out a few features:

Upcycled Bangles

I guess I'm on a bracelet kick this week.  I ran across some old metal bangles over the weekend.  They were inexpensive to begin with, and a little beat up because they were well-loved a few years ago.  But rather than toss them, I thought I'd give them a little facelift.

I "made" these out of  wire, some skinny bangles stacked together, and a little bead chain.

I wasn't quite sure what I was going for when I got started, I just started playing.  My camera battery also died while I was playing, so this won't be a full tutorial or anything, but if you happen to like the looks of these, or they spark an idea of your own, I'll try to explain what I did. :)

For the red one, I just stacked three silver bracelets together, wound some red bead chain around it, and wrapped it with wire between each bead to secure it.  This sounds easier that it was to get started - I found pretty quickly that I needed to attach the bracelets together to get it to stay put.  So I secured it with a little bit of wire in a couple spots before I got started:

That made wrapping so much easier.

At this point, I have no more in-progress photos.  But I was having fun playing, so I kept going.  I did opt to wrap a second round of wire on this bracelet because I liked the looks of it.

Then I tried this one, which I don't like as well, but it works with the others.

This one was just using both silver and Vintaj brass wire, wrapped in different directions on three black bracelets stacked together, about 5 or 6 times around.  I use 24 and 26 gauge wire.

Then I found myself with two silver and two black bangles left.  So I decided to combine them, and I did a simple, snug wrap in a couple places to hold them together.

When you're wrapping tightly like this, it's easy to pull too tight.  In this case, that would just mean pulling the bracelets on top of each other instead of holding them neatly side-by-side.  So where I wrapped, I held the bracelets in place with my plastic-coated pliers and wrapped close to them.

Then, to smooth the wire out, I used my regular pliers to smash it nice and flat. :)

I think I like this one the best. :)

So, nothing fancy today, just playing with things I already had to give them a new look!

Have you upcycled anything recently?

Bracelet For My Little Black Dress

While I was perusing what's on sale at Michael's this week, I spotted a gorgeous pendant/brooch.  But I don't wear brooches, and for this much bling, it's probably a special occasion, which means my husband will ask me with those puppy dog eyes, "Aren't you going to wear the jewelry I bought you as a wedding gift?"  Don't get me wrong, he got me a beautiful necklace and earring set.  But it doesn't allow for much variety when you have just one special, sentimental set.  And how can you explain this to a man?

Anyway - to avoid any and all gift-related arguments, what I get for my variety fix are bracelets.  I just love them!  So I decided it could certainly be converted to a bracelet, and the result is definitely Little-Black-Dress-worthy (not that I get to wear mine all that often, but I could see this as an any-night-out piece too).

Fun, right?

This is another one of those projects that's so easy, I feel like I can hardly call it a "tutorial".  But I'll show you how I did it anyway. :)

I started off with these two pieces, both 30% off this week at Michael's.  (Woohoo!)

You have to remove all the hardware from the back of the brooch.  So raid your real toolbox (or your husband's, if that's the way it is in your household) for a pair of wire cutters and cut off the bails and the pin.  Make sure they don't go flying, they have a tendency to.

Put some E6000 (or whatever heavy-duty permanent adhesive you like to use) on the blank of the cuff.

And position your flower however you like.  You may need to add a little more adhesive - make sure that there's a good connection between the flower and the blank.

Now just set it aside and let it cure for several hours.  I turned mine upside-down for this, so that it wouldn't slide around, and would dry straight.

And that's it!  Once it cured, I admired it... (and I'm sorry, you cannot photograph your own wrist without it being all awkward, LOL!)

...and told my husband we need a decent date night, stat.  So, anyone want to babysit?? ;)

Magnetic Recipe Holder

So I have been searching for a cool idea for a recipe holder, and there is no shortage of cute and innovative ideas out there.  The issue I take, though, is that supplies to make such cute and innovative things are all a little on the pricey side!  By the time I shell out $15 for supplies, I could have just bought a very cute, pre-made one.

But that's not very fun for us DIY-mamas, is it?  In my browsing for inspiration, I found a lot of magnetic versions that required wood cutting, magnetic paint, sheet metal, etc. But when I saw that metal wall plaques were 50% off at Hobby Lobby last week, I spotted a great size sign and decided that just remaking it would be so much simpler.  The edges are finished, I don't have to cut metal or paint, and it even has picture hooks on the back, so I have the option of hanging it right on the wall.

In fact, it was so easy, I feel like I can hardly call this a tutorial!  But I'll still show you how I put it together. :)

Magnetic Recipe Holder

The hardest part was deciding what I wanted it to say. :)  I finally opted for our name - but not after mulling over a French cafe idea, an Italian cucina idea, or a playful print with sweets and goodies.

I bought a sheet of scrapbook paper that looked like burlap.  (I scanned it before printing on it, so I can print more anytime I like now.)  I trimmed it down to about 7x9", the size of my sign.

Then I Mod-Podged it on.  Yep, that's all.  I did also make some matching magnets that I printed from my printer  too (you can find my tutorial for tile magnets here!)  I made one that says "yummy" for when I'm working in the kitchen, and another with our names, in case we just want to pin up a photo or a note.

The best part is the price - the sign was $2.99, the scrapbook paper 44 cents, and I used my 40% off coupon on the display easel (which you may or may not want, depending on your kitchen layout) for an extra $1.79.  Of course I have Mod Podge on-hand all the time, and I've had so much fun playing with the glass tiles that I'm just searching for reasons to make more, so that part didn't cost me anything extra.  Having a fun, personalized piece for about $5 makes my day - it doesn't make sense if going the DIY-route breaks the bank, after all.

And bonus, my husband LOVED how it turned out.  He actually suggested this would make a nice shower gift for friends getting married!  He's always smart enough to say the right things when I'm in craft-mode, but I love when he genuinely gets excited about things I make. :)

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

So, you know by now my affinity for ridiculously easy recipes, and now that I have my Little Black Book of Recipes to start filling up, I thought it would be smart when I browse the book to include a yummy-looking photo of each of our favorites.  Have you ever noticed when you look at a menu with photos, you're drawn to the items pictured?  I figure, it sure can't hurt, anyway!

So even though this is a 2-ingredient recipe (three, if you count buns), it's one of our favorites.  And favorites are meant to be shared!

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

  • 3-4 lbs. pork loin, fat trimmed off (you can also use chicken, if your family prefers it!)
  • 16 oz. bottle of BBQ sauce (our family uses Sweet Baby Ray's Original)
I cut my pork into chunks so that to will shred easier later, but it's probably not necessary.  Toss it in the crock pot on low in the morning, and it will be ready at dinnertime.  If you're at home at all during the day, stirring it here and there will help the sauce soak into the meat as it breaks up.  It should cook for 6-8 hours on low.

The key is finding a sauce that everyone loves - not too hot, not too mild for your tastes - so that you don't have to add any additional ingredients (although you can - I insist that a little brown sugar never hurt anyone, but that's up to you!)  Also, we like our meat to be really saucy (obviously, LOL) so I never use more than 3 lbs. of meat for one bottle of sauce.

BBQ goes great with coleslaw (so great, in fact, that there was none left by the time I had a chance to take a photo, LOL) and it warms up wonderfully for lunch leftovers!

What are your easy, go-to recipes?

Blog Tips: Are You noreply-comment@blogger.com?

I'm on a roll this weekend with my blog tips.  Yesterday I showed you how to turn off word verification on your comments section.  But there's another aspect of commenting that I'd like to bring your attention to: when someone leaves you a sweet comment, or asks you a question, and you go to email them back to thank them - only to discover it came from noreply-comment@blogger.com.  So now you wonder where to chase them down to reply, or if you should, or if you can even find them.  I'm surprised at how many bloggers don't leave a way for you to easily visit or respond!

I enjoy emailing back to people who visit me and take the time to say something nice about my post or about my blog.  (Raise your hand if you've exchanged a half-dozen emails in a day with me, just because you said something nice about my post?  Or I've commented on yours?  LOL!)  All of my best blog-friendships started with a simple comment, and then a reply, and then sometimes several replies.  In fact, there are some of you who drop by regularly that I would love to get to know better - but you are set to no-reply!

You may not know you're set to no-reply.  Blogger defaults err on the side of your privacy on this one, and I can understand that not everyone who leaves comments wants their email address available to the blog owner for a response.  I can respect that.  But if you're not currently getting email replies and you think you would like to, take a moment to check your settings now!

The settings are in your Blogger Profile.  First, go to your dashboard.  You'll find your blogger profile by dropping this menu down.

Choose your Blogger profile.

**Update** Thanks to Kelley from Miss Information for getting some additional info - you may have your profile tied to your Google+ profile, not your Blogger profile.  If this is the case, you will need to temporarily switch back to Blogger Profile to manage this setting.  If you find you are going straight to G+ instead of to your profile to manage your settings, use the lower drop-down menu and choose "Revert to Blogger Profile" (you can switch back to G+ when you are done by going to the same menu).

Now we should all be in the same place. :)  Edit your profile by clicking here:

And click the box that says "show my email address".  By choosing other options, like "share my profile", people will also better be able to find your blog when you leave them a comment and don't leave your link.

I hope you've found these tips helpful.  I don't normally get into blog advice here (because I'm far from being an expert!) but these were topics on my mind this weekend.  I don't know everything, but I enjoy finding out, so anytime you have a question, please feel free to ask!

Now, comment away, but please make sure I have a way to reach you!! ;)

Blog Tips: How to Turn Off Word Verification

My, my - things just keep changing, don't they?

Of course everyone is discussing the changes to GFC at the end of this month, and the new Linky Followers tool.  Which I have, and I really like!  I love how it lets me sort my blogs between those I visit daily, and those I like and want to keep track of, but maybe don't have time to go and visit every day.  It will be interesting to see if Blogger-hosted blogs end up losing GFC too - especially with how popular Linky Followers is already becoming.  Guess we will see!

Anyway - I would love for you to follow me on Linky Followers, if you're not already. :) I'm trying to re-follow all my favorite blogs who are adding Linky Followers - but to make it easy on me, if you've just added Linky Followers too, leave me your link in the comments and I will be glad to drop by and make sure I'm following you that way too!

Now, the real reason for my post today - there's another recent change that I keep running across on Blogger blogs  - the move from single-word verification to the two-word verificaation.  Is anyone else having trouble with this since they went to the black-and-white?  This spam-prevention step from Blogger, is only aimed at computer-generated spam.  If it's an actual person leaving you unwanted comments, it does nothing to discourage them except make them complete another step.  It does, however, discourage real human beings who are trying to comment if they fail the word verification, which is suddenly really hard to read.  (I know my eyes are getting old, but I had no problem with the old one-word verification step - it was much more legible.)

Not sure what I am talking about?  You probably don't even know that your blog has this setting enabled, as blog authors can comment on their own blogs without completing the word verification.  But it's this maddening process:

Please prove you're not a robot.  Heh.

Well, maybe I'm not human enough, but I find the smooshy word so much harder to read than the previous word verification process Blogger had.  What is that?  filmods? fiimods? flimods?  I am so irritated with word verification that I have made it my personal mission to show you how to turn it off.  Yes, it's possible to still get some spam comments.  Blogger spam filters are pretty good and will catch most of them.  And if you happen to get a lot, you can use this same process to turn your word verification back on.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know I have only ever just had a few spam comments since I've been blogging.  And if it's an actual person spamming you, they'll be able to get past your word verification anyway.  You can always enable comment moderation if it makes you feel more comfortable.  The above message has both, which is overkill in my opinion.

First of all, if you have recently started blogging, the default setting that Blogger sets you to is that word verification is on.  It's not something you opted to turn on yourself.  Turning it off used to be a simple setting in the old Blogger interface, but if you are new, you are probably using the new interface, where enabling or disabling it isn't an option anymore.  So let me show you how to get back to the old interface, where you can access the setting.

First of all, go to your dashboard.  Click on the little sprocket-icon-thingy to open up your options.  Select Old Blogger Interface.

You'll be taken to a screen a lot like this.  Choose "Settings".

In the Settings screen, go to the "Comments" section.

Scroll down, nearly to the bottom.  You will find the section for "Word Verification".  Set the button to "No".  BE SURE TO CLICK SAVE SETTINGS.

Then, you can switch back to the new interface by clicking "Try the Updated Blogger Interface".

Simple as that.  We all love some comment-love, so make it easy on your readers to leave you comments!
